Welcome to Ricketwood House! Located in Gullane, at the heart of Scotland's "golf coast" of East Lothian, the House provides an excellent base for golfers looking to play some of the great links courses in Scotland.
Great living space. Modern amenities. 5 bedrooms.
Easily accessible from Edinburgh airport.
Over 600 years after the first round of golf was played at the aptly named Old Course at St. Andrews in 1574, Scotland is still recognised as having amongst the best, most challenging and breathtakingly scenic courses in the world.
My goal is to make Ricketwood House a home for golfers who want to come with family, friends or business colleagues, to experience the thrill of playing the game here where it was born. I am a native of Scotland, and proud to be, but I also have been fortunate to travel the world, and have made more professional and personal connections while playing 18 than I ever did in the office. This is an opportunity for me to share my House and offer some advice so you too can enjoy playing golf in The Lothians.
You won’t find a wider selection of premier courses than right here in The Lothians and the House itself is about 200 yards from the entrance to one of the greatest courses, Muirfield.
I have set the House up to be a luxurious experience. I know when I have been traveling to play golf, you want to do so with as few hassles as possible, so breakfast and taking care of laundry etc can all be added in. I have also made some suggestions to complement the golf, including dining and ideas for other things to do if you want to take a break from golf.
The House is located on the edge of Gullane in a private setting with rural countryside views. There are three golf clubs in the village: Gullane (three courses), Luffness New and Muirfield, which as noted is located just a few minutes walk from Ricketwood House. Other notable courses are Archerfield (two courses) and Renaissance, just a few minutes drive away. North Berwick is 10 minutes drive. The surrounding countryside offers beautiful walks through woodland and along the coast which offers terrific beaches.
Gullane village is very nice and has a variety of amenities, including some really fine dining - amongst the best in the UK - and a couple of good pubs, a Post Office and general stores. North Berwick, a few minutes away, has a wider range of shops and supermarkets.
Ricketwood House was built in 2007 and features a superb layout on the ground floor which provides the perfect space for relaxing and entertaining. Featuring oak floors throughout, the finishing is to the very highest standards. The developer really did a nice job and also worked with local manufacturers and architects, which makes this property Scottish through and through. My personal favourite aspect of the House is the open-plan first floor, where the kitchen, dining room and living area flow together making for a seamless area to relax with friends and family into the wee hours. There are two reception rooms located towards the front of the property. The drawing room is a great place to have a cocktail, chat or read, and has a feature fireplace. The other front room is set up as a study/library.
The main entrance hall is lit by a large cupola which floods the House with natural light. There are recessed LED lights which also add to the ambience. A cloakroom with WC is accessed from the entrance hall and there is a large utility room with laundry and storage located to the rear.
The main reception room, which can also be accessed from the rear, features a modern kitchen with island all topped with granite worktops, integrated appliances including two ovens, two wine coolers, and fridge/ freezer.
The dining area has comfortable seating for 10. Finally, there is a nice sitting area located to the rear over-looking the garden. There is a 75” HD TV.
From the entrance hall, stairs lead up to 5 bedrooms, three en suite. There is a family bathroom with bath, separate shower and WC. Everything is finished to the highest standards. The bathrooms have modern design facilities and underfloor heating. The bedrooms can be set up to easily accommodate 10 comfortably.
The airport and motorway links are easily accessible via the A1 and the Edinburgh City Bypass. It’s about a 45 minute drive from the airport. (There is also a train service to Edinburgh (and London) from the nearby town of Drem (4 miles).)
From Edinburgh, follow the A1 eastbound, taking the exit for the A198 headed to North Berwick. Stay on the A198 until you reach Gullane, continue through the village. Duncur Road is the last road on the left before leaving Gullane. Follow the signs for Greywalls Hotel and Restaurant. Ricketwood House is the fourth property on the left.
How to get to the House:
Meet and greet
We’ll have arranged for you to be met at the House, where you can get settled and organized. We’ll show you round the house, all the security details etc. and get you comfortable with everything.
Food and drinks
We will be happy to arrange breakfast - just let us know what you’d like, and if you want us to cook it or have it delivered.
If you let us know in advance, we can also arrange for other food and drinks etc to be delivered to the House for you.
In addition, if you want dinner made and served in The House, no problem their too. I had the pleasure of enjoying a dinner party served up by two wonderful chefs. For around $60 per head, they do an awfully nice job from serving up great food of your choice to clearing up after.
TV, WiFi etc
The tv has plenty of sports channels in HD. The WiFi is good, and I have plenty of USB chargers and power adaptors. The local store will sell you them as well if you want your own.
I also have several bikes in the garage which you are welcome to use. The roads are pretty flat around here. Just be careful if you head in land as some of the roads are tight and you will come across agricultural equipment from time to time.
If you are inclined, you can get up early and cycle to Aberlady bay and back for breakfast all in about 30 minutes to get limbered up for the day.
The Archerfield Club has an awesome spa, about a 10 minute drive from the House. The place is gorgeous, and has saunas and if you want a massage or a wife or girlfriend wants to have a break from the golfer, this is one spot I think she’ll enjoy.
Renaissance has a really good workout facility. It’s a 5 minute drive, but if you want to jog or take the bike, you sure can. Again, just let us know and we’ll arrange that.
This has happened to me before; a set of clubs doesn’t make it on the flight which is a total bore. So, if that happens to you, Archerfield and Renaissance will be able to rent you a set of new Clubs. Just let the caretakers know.
The house caretakers
My caretakers are terrific, and they will look after you. If you need anything, just ask.
